Navaratna is a Sanskrit word which translates to Nine Gems. In Vedic Astrology, the “Navaratnasâ€, nine sacred gems are related to a planet that it is ruled by. Each gemstone is known to either strengthen or counteract the power of its ruling planet, which when worn by a person enhances certain qualities particular to that stone in the wearer. When the gems touch your skin, they are believed to produce healing effects on the body. The nine gems or Navaratnas are –

RUBY: a Ruby is a gemstone whose color can vary from pink to red-blood depending on its chemical combination. It comes from word â€Ruberâ€, Latin for “redâ€.
Ruby is the stone of the sun and hence has a supreme position among the navaratnas. Ruby was used by royalty to focus and sustain their ability to command and rule. It enhances straits such as leadership, will power, purity and independence. It contributes to vigor, self-image, public perception, virtue and the capacity to command.

Hindus worship the Navagrahas or 9 Planets as Gods. It is believed that celestial bodies in the cosmos have an influence on human lives and is responsible for the good times or bad times we face in life These 9 planets of great significance are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. In reality, Out of these nine Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu are not planets. According to Hindu Astrology an ill placement of any of these planets in ones horoscope can cause diseases or other negative effects in that person’s life. The Navagrahas needs to be propitiated in order to have a good life. Fortunately this situation can be remedied by wearing the gemstone of the ill placed planet.
